Montenegro on West PH Sea dispute: ‘Respect international law’

Montenegro on Friday called for respect for international law, as it cited China’s sweeping claims in the disputed South China Sea.

“We are a small and peaceful country… My message is to respect international law. We need to have the standards,” Montenegro Prime Minister Dritan Abazović told CNN Philippines’ The Final Word.

As a member of the United Nations, the prime minister said the Philippines can always rely on Montenegro to always promote international law.

China recently released an updated version of its standard map that features 10 dashes forming a U shape to show the entire South China Sea is part of its territory.

The map overlaps with the exclusive economic zones of the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has already filed a protest against the controversial map.
