Xi Jinping Meets with Indonesian President Joko Widodo

On the afternoon of July 27, 2023, President Xi Jinping met in Chengdu with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who came to China to attend the opening ceremony of the 31st Summer Universiade and visit China.

Xi Jinping pointed out that last year, President Joko Widodo and I jointly opened a new chapter for the two countries to jointly build a community of shared future. On the road of realizing national modernization and national rejuvenation, China and Indonesia have a high degree of similarity in concept and offer each other development opportunities. They are like-minded fellow travelers and good partners. China is willing to take the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries this year as an opportunity to deepen strategic cooperation with Indonesia, build a model of developing countries with a shared future, solidarity and cooperation, and common development, and inject more certainty and positive energy into the region and the world.

Xi Jinping emphasized that China is willing to maintain regular strategic communication with Indonesia, strengthen the exchange of experience in state governance and administration, launch the “2+2” dialogue mechanism between the foreign ministers and defense ministers of the two countries, and build high-level strategic mutual trust. The integration of the “Belt and Road” initiative and Indonesia’s “Global Ocean Fulcrum” concept has achieved significant results. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail is about to open to traffic. The two sides should make every effort to complete the “last mile” construction, ensure the high standard and high quality of the project, and inject acceleration into Indonesia’s development. The two sides should continue to improve cooperation in comprehensive industrial parks, and focus on promoting the construction of “regional comprehensive economic corridors” and “two countries, two parks”. China supports the construction of Indonesia’s new capital and the development of the North Kalimantan Industrial Park, and is willing to expand cooperation with Indonesia in areas such as new energy vehicles and smart cities to jointly promote industrial digital transformation. China is willing to continue to expand Indonesia’s imports of bulk commodities and high-quality agricultural products, implement the “Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement” with high quality, and strengthen cooperation in food security, poverty alleviation, rural revitalization, vocational education, language teaching, medicine and health, cultural tourism and other fields .

Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 10th anniversary of my proposal to build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future, and it is also the 20th anniversary of China’s accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. China is willing to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership with ASEAN, support Indonesia in assuming the rotating chair of ASEAN this year, lead ASEAN to adhere to strategic independence, unite and strengthen itself, and jointly build a regional stability center and development highland. China is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with Indonesia in multilateral mechanisms such as the G20 and BRICS, promote the implementation of global development initiatives, global security initiatives, and global civilization initiatives, maintain regional and global peace and stability, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Widodo said that since I received President Xi Jinping’s visit in Bali last year, the bilateral relations have made many substantial progress. The Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway will be opened to traffic as scheduled in August this year, and strategic projects such as the construction of Indonesia’s new capital and the development of the North Kalimantan Industrial Park, which China has actively participated in, are progressing smoothly. Indonesia firmly adheres to the one-China policy, and is willing to continue to strengthen cooperation with China in investment, marine fishery, food security, medical and health care, and further promote the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. The global development initiatives, global security initiatives, and global civilization initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping are open and inclusive, and Indonesia actively supports them. We appreciate China’s support for Indonesia’s work as the rotating chair of ASEAN, and support for maintaining ASEAN’s central position in the regional architecture. Indonesia is willing to intensify strategic communication with China to jointly maintain regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.

After the meeting, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of a number of bilateral cooperation documents on exporting agricultural products to China, sanitation, joint research and development, the new capital of Indonesia, and the construction of “two countries and two parks” between China and Indonesia.

Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Wang Yi, Chen Yiqin and others participated in the above activities.
