Landing craft will be created under HIMARS: what is known about the unusual project

In Australia, they plan to replace the landing craft of the Vietnam War with more modern designs. Navantia Australia offered its own solution.

hipbuilding company Navantia Australia is offering the Australian Army landing craft capable of carrying HIMARS MLRS. This was reported in the official Twitter account of the manufacturer.

A subsidiary of the Spanish Navantia, together with the Australian UGL, offer LMV-M landing craft to replace the outdated LCM-8 in the army. A distinctive feature of their proposal is the possibility of transferring the HIMARS multiple launch rocket system.

As noted in the publication, the Australian Department of Defense will purchase 20 installations for $385 million. In fact, LMV-M (Littoral Maneiver Vessel Medium) is an Australian development, as it is planned to establish production in Australia and use local contractors. UGL is one of the leading service and manufacturing companies in the country. It is stated that they have extensive experience in the implementation of complex engineering projects, and more than 6,700 people work under their wing.

In “Military” they add that a tender is being held in Australia to replace the landing craft LCM-8, which was developed during the Vietnam War. Navantia Australia first announced plans to participate in the tender in June 2022. The company already has rich experience of cooperation with the Australian Navy, they have built:

  • 12 LLC landing craft
  • 2 universal landing ships
  • 3 destroyers
  • 2 support ships

Recall that on February 9, the US general announced that a training center for MLRS HIMARS would be created in Europe .

On February 8, the United States approved the transfer of the HIMARS MLRS to Ukraine in a $10 billion package .
